Over the past few months I’ve been deep cleaning our home. I’ve been going room to room cleaning, down-sizing and organizing all of our household items. I’m in no hurry to get it done, so I’m taking my time and getting it done right! The first thing that I do is make a list tailored to each room in our home. I write down all of the cleaning tasks and products that I need to complete the project. Then I get started.

First, let’s talk about deep cleaning. That means cleaning all light fixtures, baseboards, carpeting, flooring, furniture, linens, windows, etc. EVERYTHING gets a good cleaning. Be prepared to vacuum, dust, shampoo carpets, doing laundry, etc. If you’re putting in the effort do it right.
Downsizing…be prepared to get rid of things. I have 3 bins…a donate to the thrift store, a trash bin and a family/friends bin. Anything we don’t want or no longer need gets tossed into one of the three bins. Be prepared to part with things. If you have used them or needed them for 2 or more years…time to let them go unless they’re family mementos.
I’ve been teaching myself how to get organized and learning as I go. Home organization products can be expensive. I’ve learned to shop for some of the items that I need at our local thrift store. I’ve been purchasing wicker, rattan and straw baskets and bins to get things organized. I look for square shaped and rectangular shaped ones that can sit on closet shelves, slid into the bottom of a bookcase, slid underneath a bed, placed underneath the bathroom vanity, used in your pantry, to sort and house arts & craft supplies, etc. I stay away from baskets that are round or oval in shape or ones that have handles. They don’t work for me.
You want to thoroughly clean all baskets and bins that you pick-up from the thrift store. I take them outside to clean them. I like using Dawn Powerwash Spray. It’s great at removing dirt, grease, debris, gunk and stains. I wipe down the basket, spray my cleaning cloth with the Dawn PowerWash Spray (a generous amount) and then wipe down the basket again. Go over it with a clean, damp cloth if you need to remove any soapy residue.
Let them outside for a few hours to air dry. I then mist them lightly with Lysol Disinfecting Spray to kill anything that was left behind and to remove any odors that may be lingering. Let them sit outside another 1-2 hours….now they’re ready to use!
Check out my photograph for the type of baskets that I buy that work BEST for these type’s of organizing projects.
