Looking to keep the kids busy this summer? If so, how about a few Arts and Crafts projects to help expand their creativity. Today’s project is an easy one and doesn’t require a lot of expensive supplies. No pattern or template is needed. A great project for any age. The little ones can just “paint” any design, including scribbles while the older children can do more elaborate ones. My grandchildren made a Minion design, a cute orange dinosaur design and the youngest one did just a rainbow colored rock.
Here’s a list of the supplies you’ll need to get started.

Smooth Landscaping Rocks or River Stones
Acrylic Paints with Paint Brushes
Water Dish and Paper Towels
Acrylic Paint Markers
Clear Mod Podge Sealer
Foam Brush
Pencil for Sketching a Design (optional)
Wash all smooth rocks and stones in warm soapy water. I like to use Dawn Dishwashing Soap. It does a great job at removing dirt, grease and grime. Rinse with clean water. Let them air dry overnight.
Base coat all of the stones with white acrylic craft paint. By base coating them…it will allow all of the other colors applied on top to be more vivid. Let dry until the paint is no longer tacky.
Kids can use a pencil to lightly sketch on a design if desired. My grandchildren like to use a pack of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers. The markers are dual-ended with one medium tip and a fine tip. They don’t require priming, no drippy messes and no foul paint odors. I purchased them from Amazon for an affordable price. These paint markers dry quicker than traditional acrylic paints and a brush. They can do really nice detailed work by using the paint markers.
Once the rocks have dried you need to seal-in the design. Use a foam brush to brush-on 1-2 light coats of Clear Mod Podge Sealer. We like using the one with a glossy finish. It goes on white but dries crystal clear. Let the rocks and stones dry thoroughly overnight.
You can find over 300+ painted rocks and painted seashells arts and crafts projects on the TCC blog. Hope you enjoy them!
