A friend of mine and her husband live in northern Georgia. Two weeks ago her mother-in-law called them screaming about a snake in the house and wanted them to come get it out. They jumped into the car and made the 20 minute drive to her home. While driving there…they thought that perhaps she was having a mental breakdown or something because they couldn’t imagine a big snake slithering around in the house.
Well, they pulled up into the driveway and found her outside screaming and hollering about a snake in the kitchen. She absolutely refused to go back into the house. After seeing her behavior outside…they knew that it had to be true.
My friend Mr. R. went into the home and into the kitchen. Low and behold…there it was! A nice sized black rat snake slithering across the floor. A healthy snake who wasn’t happy to be stuck in the house. It immediately let it’s presence be known. Mr. R isn’t afraid of snakes and has no experience on trying to catch one in a confined space.

He decided to get a broomstick and opened the back door. Over the course of 40 minutes he used the broomstick to coax the hissing rat snake out the back door. Once outside, the snake took off in a hurry. Luckily, no one got hurt…including the snake. His mother though…was still shook-up about the entire thing and refused to go back into the house that night. She ended up spending the night at their house. The next day Mr. R. went over and thoroughly checked out the house to make sure no other creatures were slithering around.
Here at our home…my wife and I both despise snakes. We know they have a purpose on Earth but that doesn’t mean we have to like them. I probably would of called a wildlife officer to come and retrieve it because neither of us like to be in the same vicinity as a snake…any type of snake!
How do you feel about snakes? Love them or hate them? Scared of them? What would you do if you ever found one slithering around in your house?
