Container Gardening – Growing Strawberries

June 17, 2026 by Sam H. Leave a Comment

Two years ago we purchased a large metal container to start a new container garden. For this particular garden we decided to grow strawberries. It’s one of our favorite fruits during the late spring and summer seasons. Strawberries are really easy to grow in your backyard garden. I purchased the metal container from a local home and garden store. I built the wooden platform that it sits on. No back-breaking weeding is needed.

I purchased the strawberry plants from Amazon. I specifically bought the Everbearing Ozark Beauty Strawberry Plants. I got 20 bare root plants in the package. You’ll want to read and follow the planting instructions that come in the package. These were the best strawberry plants that I’ve ever purchased. They grow fast and are disease resistant. They spread nicely and every year you’ll get a bigger crop of berries! Our entire container if full of them and it’s a large container!

We live in the northeast and get plenty of rain showers throughout the spring season, so I rarely have to water or mess with the plants. I basically leave them alone to do their thing! They do need full sun, or at least 6 hours of sun a day to get the best growing results. We filled our container with a rich growing soil that was made specifically for home gardening. I recommend you use a good soil or mix-in some store-bought soil with the dirt in your backyard.

Our plants produce strawberries for 3-4 weeks every year during the month of May and early June. The berries are large in size and sweet in regards to their taste, but not overly-sweet. They’re the perfect strawberries for our needs. You can eat them freshly picked, bake with them, slice and freeze them or use them to make your favorite homemade strawberry jam. The photo is my post are berries freshly picked from our garden. YUMMY!
