This year I decided to add a rock garden on our property that contains painted rocks and seashells. It’s not a big rock garden but large enough for me to fill up with some colorful designs. Today, I’m sharing a few hand painted rocks that I made last month using the ZenTangle Doodling style of art. It’s very easy to do and you don’t have to be a professional artist to make them!!! You’ll find over 300 quick and easy painted rock and painted seashell designs projects on the TCC blog.

Getting started…go out and collect a few small to medium sized rocks. The smoother the better, so think river rocks and landscaping stones but other rocks will work too. Wash them with Dawn Liquid Dish Soap in warm, soapy water. Why Dawn? It does the best job at removing dirt and debris. Rinse with clean water. Let them air dry overnight.
You need to base coat the rocks with white acrylic craft paint or with a white spray paint. I like to do one coat on all sides of the stone. Let it dry until the paint is no longer tacky.
Use a pencil to mark off irregular sized and shape sections on the rock.
To keep the design work simple I like to use a pack of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers and a Tooli-Art Black and/or White Fine Tip Paint Marker. The BETEM Paint Markers are great for coloring-in the larger areas or the blocks that you made on the rock. These paint markers require no priming, no dripping messes, no clogged tips and no foul paint odors. You can purchase them from Amazon for a really affordable price.
Once all of the blocks have been colored-in…it’s time to start doodling! I like to do the doodling using a Tooli-Art Fine Tip Paint Marker in black or white. These do require priming. The Tooli-Art fine tip paint markers are great for adding intricate small designs, doing outline work or for writing wordage. They do take a little longer to dry compared to the BETEM Paint Markers and they’re more expensive in regards to price. You can purchase them from Amazon. Let all of the paint thoroughly dry.
Finishing up – You need to seal all of the paint one of two ways. You can take them outside and spray them with 1-2 light coats of a Clear Acrylic Spray-On Sealer or you can use a paint brush with Clear Mod Podge Sealer …again, brushing on 1-2 light coats. It goes on white but will dry crystal clear. Let them dry overnight until they’re no longer tacky. That’s it you’re done!
You can now display them in your flower garden or rock garden as part of your pretty yard art display.
