One of my hobbies is arts and crafts. I participate in several painted kindness rocks and kindness seashells groups on Facebook. That’s where you paint rocks and shells with any design that you like and leave them around your community for others to find. It’s a pay-it-forward random acts of kindness project. Over the years I’ve posted over 300+ painted seashell designs and over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing some of my painted rock designs.

First…I’m no professional artist. All of my designs are quick and easy-to-make. You don’t need a pattern or template. You’ll need some smooth surface river or landscaping rocks, acrylic craft paints, paint brush, acrylic paint markers, an acrylic clear spray sealer and maybe a few other things…depending on the design.

I drew an outline of a fish onto a piece of paper. I then cut it out to use as a pattern. It’s a basic FISH SHAPE, nothing fancy.
Wash all rocks with warm, soapy water. Rinse with clean water and let them air dry overnight.
You need to base coat the rocks in your desired color using acrylic craft paint. You may need 2 coats of paint to get the desired coverage. Let dry until it’s no longer tacky. Trace the fish outline on top of the rock using a pencil.
To color-in the fish and do the design work I used a pack of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers. They have dual-ended tips (medium and fine), don’t require priming, no dippy paint messes and no foul paint odors. Plus, they dry quickly and are affordable to purchase! Color-in the fish and do your design work first. Once the paint is dry you’ll want to use a fine-tip black paint marker to do the outline work and to write any wordage onto the rock. Let dry for a few hours.
Take the painted rocks outside. Spray them with a coat of Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer . This sealer will take 1-4 hours to dry depending on current weather conditions and temperatures. The sealer will protect the painted surface. That’s it, you’re done!
