Over the course of 4 days we watched a raccoon wonder around our property and was hanging out. We often get wildlife animals passing through…but rarely do they hang out for any length of time. Well, this situation was different.
We kept an eye on that raccoon and after a few days we could clearly tell that it was sick. It looked underweight and would often just lay rolled up in a ball. We put out some food and water and he wasn’t interested in that. As I got a little closer I could see that not only was it sick…but it was injured too.

I made a call to the local wildlife office and they sent out a wildlife officer the following day. Thankfully, the raccoon was still alive but barely. He was able to easily catch him and put him into a crate. He was taking the raccoon to receive medical care immediately. He agreed, it was in very poor condition and most likely wouldn’t make it.
After a few days I got a call from that wildlife officer letting me know that they had to humanely euthanize the raccoon. It had a few fractured bones and was pretty sick with other things. It refused to eat or drink…just wanted to lay. A very sad ending, but I’m glad I took the time to report the injured animal and had someone come out to get it. No one…including wild animals should be left to suffer in pain. If you see injured wildlife….please call your local officials to come out to pick it up. A rescue group that deals with wildlife would be an option too!
