Classic Sloppy Joes Recipe with Serving Suggestions and Freezing Instructions

March 31, 2026 by Classystaff

Classic Sloppy Joes make for a quick and hearty weeknight dinner. From start to finish…less than 30 minutes to make. We will often toss French Fries or Onion Rings in the air fryer while we’re cooking up the barbecue for our sandwiches. This is one meal that everyone in the family will eat. This is the classic, old-fashion version meaning it’s not hot or spicy.

Classic Sloppy Joes Recipe

1 lb. lean ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 small bell pepper, finely chopped
1 cup ketchup
3-4 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
dash of salt and ground black pepper

Brown the lean ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until it’s no longer pink. Drain away the excess grease. Add-in the finely chopped onion and bell peppers. Simmer over medium heat until the vegetables are done. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, salt and ground black pepper. Simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until it’s done. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Serving Suggestions:

Toasted hamburger rolls
Un-toasted hamburger rolls
On a Baked Potato as a Topper
On a Big Spoonful of Mashed Potatoes
Served on a Hotdog with a Bun
On a Garden Salad or Taco Salad

Freezing Instructions: The Sloppy Joes meat (once fully cooked) freezes very well. Place in a freezer container or zipper closure freezer bags once cool. Label and date the contents. Freeze for 3-6 months. You can thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat on the stove-top (best results) or in the microwave oven.
