Classic Homemade Yellow Cake Recipe

February 10, 2026 by Classystaff Leave a Comment

Tired of boxed cake mixes? If so, you’ll love this easy-to-make classic yellow cake recipe. You’ll need to bake it in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish. It’s moist and delicious! Perfect with your favorite flavor of frosting spread on top. When baking…I always recommend that you use PURE vanilla extract, not immitation for the best flavor results. Here’s my favorite Chocolate Frosting Recipe if you’re looking for a good one for the cake or cupcakes.

Classic Yellow Cake Recipe

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with non-stick baking spray. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt.

In a separate mixing bowl beat together the granulated sugar and vegetable shortening until creamy. Beat in the large eggs. Add this to the flour mixture alternating with milk until it’s combined together. Stir in the pure vanilla extract until it’s distributed throughout the cake batter.

Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake in a 350 degrees F. preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the center of the cake is done. Remove from the oven and let cool thoroughly before adding your favorite frosting or icing on the top.
