How to Take Care and Store Metal Cookie Cutters

January 14, 2026 by Classystaff

Cut-out cookies are one of my favorite type’s of cookies to make. Yes, they’re time consuming…but they always taste great! Besides that…my grandchildren enjoy getting into the kitchen and helping me make and decorate them! It becomes a great family bonding session while teaching the kids important lessons on how to bake!

You don’t need a special holiday or occassion to make cut-out cookies. You can make them any time of the year…although they’re most popular during the Christmas and Easter holidays. When it comes to cookie cutters…I prefer using metal ones that cut out the shape easier and the metal cookie cutters will last for decades with proper care. I don’t wash them in the dishwasher, I prefer hand washing in hot soapy water…rinsing them clean, towel dry them completely. No moisture…you need them to dry completely before storing them away.

One of my favorite brands of cookie cutters is Farberware. They’re affordable…come in a ton of different designs and sizes and are easy-to-use. You can find them in kitchen stores, department stores and via online retailers like Amazon. Heck, you can find them on the secondary market too….like Ebay, thrift stores and antique shops. The Farberware Christmas Cookie Cutter Set that I’m showing in my photograph I purchased last month from a local thrift store. Brand New, never opened and in original packaging!

After using your cookie cutters it’s important to store them correctly. You never want to toss them into a drawer where they can be damaged by other things. I often see them store in people’s kitchen junk drawers or utensil drawers! I store mine in a reusable zipper closure mesh storage pouch. I have them separated by the holiday or ocassion. I then have all of the pouches stored in a plastic container on a shelf in my pantry closet. This keeps them neat, organized and damage-free.

Any metal cookie cutters that start to show rusting or other damage to the metal should be tossed away. You never want any of that “leaching” into your food.
