How to Organize and Store Small Seashells

January 22, 2026 by Classystaff Leave a Comment

I’ve been collecting seashells and ocean treasures for the past 40+ years. Over the decades I’ve amassed quite the collection. When it comes to organizing and storing the small seashells I like to store them in plastic embroidery floss storage boxes. You can get them in a variety of different sizes. I particularly purchase the boxes that allow me to customize the size of the inside with removable dividers.

Getting started…you need to properly wash and dry all of the shells. You want to remove sand, debris, fishy odors and salt water from them. I like to wash them with Dawn Liquid Dishwashing Soap. If needed, let them soak for an hour and then rinse with clean water. Let air dry overnight.

I like to identify the shell before I store it. There are all kinds of seashell identification guides on Amazon that you can purchase and use. You can make labels for the shells and stick them inside the storage box. Self-adhesive labels or just paper & tape will work just fine. Group all “like” shells together to help save on storage space.

What’s nice about using these type’s of storage boxes is that you can see the contents inside. Plus, you can stack them together on a shelf, tuck them underneath a bed or store them in small areas around the home. They don’t take up a lot of storage space! I purchase the Plastic Embroidery Floss Storage Boxes from Amazon. I’m sure other seashell collectors use different methods, but that’s how I like to organize and store mine.
