How and When to Safely Remove Bird’s Nests

January 15, 2026 by Sam H.

Every year we get multiple species of birds building nests on our front porch, back porch, in the garage and roof areas around our home. It’s fun to watch them to start building their nests in early spring but when late fall rolls around they abandon them. In our area…we have strict ordinances regarding bird nest removal. For example, during the breeding season we’re not allowed to remove them. We can ONLY remove them November through mid February when they’re not in use.

During the month of December we do a complete inspection around our home and property. All bird’s nests that are around the house or garden sheds are safely removed. To do this…you want to wear gloves on your hands and a face mask. Nests can contain a lot of nasty bacteria and parasites. Once you have the nest down…you can bag it and trash it or toss it out into the woods. You don’t want to keep them as “souvenirs” or for crafting projects!!!

Depending on the area you may need to give it a good cleaning to remove dirt, debris, germs and parasites. Always wear gloves and a face mask…even when you’re cleaning the area. We like to use a good outdoor bleach product mixed with water along with a scrub brush which we toss away when we’re done. After cleaning…rinse the area with clean water. You can use natural cleaning products if that’s what you prefer but make sure it’s a product that will kill germs and bacteria.

Removing bird’s nests is part of our regular winter season home maintenance. You want to check your local ordinances for the rules and guidelines for your specific area.
