Lancaster County…home to the largest Amish population in Pennsylvania. Over the past 4 decades Lancaster County has become a big tourist attraction for those who want to visit Amish country. Millions of people come to see the Amish farms, dine at Amish eatieries, to shop for Amish goods and perhaps stay in a romantic B&B. There’s a lot of things to see and do in Lancaster County.
One thing you need to be prepared for is sharing the road with Amish horses and buggies. You’ll find them on back roads, main roads and sometimes in the heart of Lancaster city. You need to be respectful and not follow them too closely. You never want to blow your vehicle horn or do anything that may “spook” a horse. The Amish horse and buggy is how the Amish get from point A to point B and you will see them out on the roads year round.

They get a lot of attention and people will often try to stop to photograph them. When photographing you need to make sure that you don’t get any facial photos (they don’t like their pictures taken) and don’t take photos of any personal identifying info…like license plates, address plaques, etc. Don’t go onto their property or private property to obtain a photo. That’s against the law. Always and I mean ALWAYS be respectful.
