I’m always looking for better ways to re-use glass and plastic jars around our home. That includes…glass mason jars. Last month I gave my walk-in pantry a good cleaning and re-organized many items that I keep stored in there. One thing I decided to do was reorganize some of the dry goods and repackage them into glass mason jars. As a home canner, I have a ton of glass jars that I can use.

When it comes to storage containers…glass is a LOT better than storing your foods in plastic. You don’t have to worry about any chemicals leeching from the plastic and into your foods. In addition, storing in glass jars saves you on storage space and allows you to see the contents inside the jars. As an added bonus, just toss them into your dishwasher for easy cleaning!

I purchased a bunch of the plastic ReCap mason jar flip-top lids and pour spout lids from Amazon. These caps and lids are reusable, so they’re a one-time investment. A lot of them will fit on top of various other type’s of jars like mayonnaise, pasta sauce, sweet sauce, pickle jars, etc. Just depends on the manufacturer of the jar and size. With that said, they do fit on your classic pint and quart size glass mason jars that are typically used for home canning.
Things that I personally like to store in glass mason jars include but are not limited to:
Brown Sugar
Confectioner’s Sugar
Coffee Beans
Dehydrated and Mini Marshmallows
Baking Soda
Baking Powder
Cornstarch
Pickling Salt
Chocolate Chips
Cocoa Powder
Sprinkles and Colored Cookie Sugars
Vanilla Beans
Dry Pasta Noodles
Quick Oats Oatmeal
Rice

You can store all sorts of things. You can label your jars if you prefer…I typically don’t because I can see the contents inside. Storing in the glass mason jars allows me to find what I need at a glance. It keeps my pantry goods and staples fresher for a longer period of time…and bug-free! It’s better for our health and our planet for us to store in glass vs plastic containers & boxes.
What’s really nice about this is…you can start slowly in changing your pantry storage over to this type of system as you accumulate glass jars or you can do it all at once. You can find the reusable caps and lids in various colors (so you can color-coordinate your items) and in various styles (flip-top, pour, sprinkle, etc). Check out all of the different options available over on Amazon.
