It’s baking season and that’s when my cookie cutters get a good workout in the kitchen. Like most home bakers…I have a collection of cookie cutters that are made out of metal and plastic. Regardless of the material, I clean them all the same way. Let me first say this…Don’t wash them in the dishwasher! Even though they may say dishwasher-safe…the dishwasher can cause damage and premature rusting.

When it comes to cleaning cookie cutters I highly recommend hand washing them in your kitchen sink. I like to fill up my sink with warm water with a squirt or two of Dawn Liquid Dishwashing Soap. Why Dawn? I think it does the best job at getting grease, oil and stuck-on goo off of the cookie cutters. I like to let them soak in the soapy water for about 15 minutes.
Cookie cutters (especially the plastic ones) have small nooks and crannies. I use an old toothbrush to get dough and gunk out of those tiny spaces. Once you have washed them…rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Use a soft cotton towel to dry them as much as you can. You want them to be completely dry before putting them away. I will dry with a towel and then lay them out on another towel to finish air-drying for 30 minutes before I put them away.
When you have metal cookie cutters you want to make sure you remove all food particles, oils, grease, water, etc. from it. Those things can cause the metal to deteriote and pre-mature rusting. Always…make sure they’re clean and dry before putting them away.
