The temperatures are dropping and the chill is in the air. During the fall and winter season I enjoy drinking homemade hot chocolate, especially toward’s the end of my day. I’ll drink it plain but I really enjoy experimenting by adding goodies to it such as: peppermint sticks, redhot candies, mini marshmallows, marshmallow creme, chocolate shavings, whipped cream, etc. You can enjoy homemade hot cocoa a variety of different ways.
Today I wanted to share with you the classic homemade hot chocolate recipe. Once you have the classic recipe…you can add whatever you like to it! The recipe will yield five 8 fl. oz. servings. When using vanilla extract you want to use the PURE Vanilla Extract, not immitation!

Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
4 cups milk
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Simmer water, granulated sugar, cocoa powder and salt in a pan over medium heat stirring until lumps are dissolved. Add milk to the pan. Stir and bring slowly to a simmer and simmer for 3-4 minutes. To enhance the flavor, stir in the vanilla extract just before serving.
