Over the years my family has developed several Thanksgiving traditions. These traditions are something we all look forward to every year. Some are silly and fun…while other’s are more serious. Today….I thought I would share some of our family Thanksgiving traditions with all of you.
1. We rotate houses for the official Thanksgiving meal. My mom and I rotate but both of us do our fair share of the cooking. We serve both turkey and ham as the main course of our meal. I will typically make the side dishes while my mom makes the desserts. She’s a great baker!!! You can count on having homemade apple pie, pumpkin pie and her famous strawberry gelatin dessert.
2. If the weather is decent we head to the local cemetery for an after-meal walk. While we’re there we visit the graves of family members who are no longer with us. It’s important to remember our family members who have passed and the walking is a great way to help our big meal digest!
3. We’re a big gaming family and love to play board and card games together. For 1-2 hours we play games together as a family.
4. Before calling it a day…we enjoy a little dessert with one another. It’s at this time my mom gives each of us our new Christmas tree ornament for the year. I have 40 years worth of Christmas tree ornaments that I’ve received from her and she continues the tradition with me and my kids every year. When my kids move out on their own…they’ll have a whole bunch of ornaments to take along with them!
5. Before my kids go to bed that night…we all settle down to watch a family movie together. After a long day…they typically fall asleep halfway through it!
What kind of Thanksgiving traditions do you and your family have?
