Why Try a Homemade Mozzie Repellent?

October 29, 2025 by Sam H.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a warm Aussie evening outdoors, you’ve probably met our least favourite guests—mozzies, commonly known as mosquitoes. While store-bought sprays can do the trick, many people prefer a safer, natural approach. That’s where the homemade mozzie repellent becomes indispensable. They can be prepared rather easily, are inexpensive, and do not contain any strong chemicals. These DIY repellents would rather fade the skin irritation and the environmental impact than let the insects in.

Why Go Natural?

Insect repellents that are used very often have DEET and other synthetic chemicals as their main ingredients, which sometimes lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions. Meanwhile, natural insect repellents are made with essential oils and plant extracts—most of which are readily available in your kitchen or garden—thus, they are not only very effective but also safe for skin.

Beyond being gentle on skin, natural mosquito repellents:

*     They are eco-friendly and biodegradable

*      Can be customised to suit your scent preference

*       Often provides added aromatherapy benefits

*       Reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals

Key Ingredients That Mozzies Hate

The effectiveness of your homemade mozzie repellent depends largely on the ingredients you choose. Some essential oils are proven to repel mosquitoes naturally:

Citronella oil – The classic choice for warding off mozzies, found in many candles and sprays.
Eucalyptus oil – A favourite in Australia, it gives off a refreshing scent that mosquitoes dislike.
Tea tree oil – Recognised for its capability to combat bacteria and its anti-inflammatory effect.
Lavender oil – It drives away mosquitoes, and at the same time, it calms the bites caused by insects.
Peppermint oil – It cools down the area, and if the mosquitoes are around, it won’t let them be there.
Lemongrass oil – It is lemony and fresh-smelling and goes perfectly with citronella.

How to Make Your Own Mozzie Repellent

A mere few minutes are all it takes to make your very own mosquito repellent; a simple little yet effective recipe to get you going:

Ingredients:

*     10 drops citronella essential oil

*     10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

*     5 drops lavender essential oil

*     2 tablespoons of witch hazel or vodka (to help preserve the mixture)

*     2 tablespoons of water

*     Small spray bottle

Instructions:

Start by adding the witch hazel (or vodka) to your spray bottle.
Add your essential oils.
Top up with water.
Shake well before each use.

Tip: You can adjust the scent strength or mix different oils to suit your liking.

Other Natural Mozzie Deterrents

In case the aim is to shield the skin against the effects of a pollutant, there exist natural remedies you may try instead on the skin.

*      Burn citronella candles or diffuse essential oils near outdoor seating.

*       Plant mozzie-repelling herbs like basil, mint, and marigolds around your patio.

*       Use fans outdoors, as mosquitoes struggle to fly in the wind.

*      Wear light-coloured, long clothing—mozzies are drawn to darker shades.

Ready to Make the Switch?

In pursuit of a healthier, sustainable lifestyle, it would be a straightforward and very rewarding process for you to create a homemade mosquito repellent. Just a few natural ingredients will let you have outdoor evenings without the noise—or the bites. If you are getting ready for a backyard barbeque or a camping trip next time, please mix a batch and keep it with you. Your skin, your wallet, and the planet will thank you.
