Last month I invited a few buddies over from work to enjoy a backyard barbecue. My wife and I prepared a feast of bbq chicken quarters, grilled corn on the cob, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad and a few other things. Twice a year I try to do this for the guys I work with and they always look forward to it. We make everything from scratch!

On this particular day I used the homemade bbq sauce on chicken quarters that I picked up from a local butcher. You can use the sauce on chicken, beef or pork.

Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe for Chicken
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons ground mustard
1 teaspoon ground paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 to 1 tsp. hot sauce
Mix up all of the above ingredients in a bowl. If you like your sauce with a lot of heat…you can increase the amount of hot sauce that you add. We like it mild. If you like the sauce more on the sweet side…you can add 2 Tbsp. of honey. Once it’s mixed up…you want to coat all sides of the chicken. Be generous when applying it. You can then bake it in the oven or toss it onto the grill for cooking. Make sure you use a digital meat thermometer to make sure the it’s done before removing it from the heat source. Let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.
Tips: You can make the bbq sauce up ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze it for up to 6 months. Always label and date items that you place into the freezer.
