5 Essential Tips for First-Time Contact Lens Users

October 5, 2025 by Sam H.

Contact lenses are a promising alternative to glasses, which are convenient, flexible, and allow enjoying clear vision without frames. The transition process can be liberating and a little bit daunting to first time users. When approached properly and directed, contact lens wear is an easy way of life. These are five tips that any beginner ought to be aware of to ensure that the experience is comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.

Select the Right Contact Lenses

The first thing is to visit an eye care specialist and have a thorough eye checkup and proper prescription. The contact lenses come in a great selection–daily, monthly, soft, rigid gas permeable, and even astigmatism or presbyopia specialty lenses. An optometrist will assist in choosing the best alternative depending on the needs, eye health, and lifestyle preferences. Do not self-prescribe or purchase lenses without a prescription; they may not fit, and may endanger the health of the eye. Always remember to visit an eye care specialist regularly and use reliable sources such as www.lens.co.il to purchase quality lenses and get to know more about the care and usage

Always put Hygiene First

The golden rule of all users of contact lenses is hygiene. Wash hands with soap and water- preferably fragrance free and oil free- before touching lenses or your eyes. Wipe hands with a lint-free towel, making sure that no particles get onto the lens. Use fingertips to touch the lenses and do not touch fingernails to reduce scratching or contamination. Wash and wipe lenses as directed, and never use tap water, which may harbor harmful microorganisms.

Master Addition and Removal Techniques

Contact lenses can be difficult to insert and remove, though with these steps they can be safely and easily done:

* Hold the lens on the end of your index finger that is dominant.

* Use the opposite hand to hold your upper eyelid open and the dominant hand to hold your lower eyelid open.

* Look directly forward or a little upwards and place the lens on the cornea very gently.

* Blink and leave the lens to rest–in case of discomfort, take out, run under water and replace.

* To take off, find, draw down the bottom lid, and squeeze the lens with thumb and index finger.

These steps are built on patience, calmness, and repetition.

Protect Lens Cleaning and Storing

Cleaning and storage will prolong the life of the lens and avoid infections. Clean and store lenses using only the recommended sterile solution; do not use old solution or change lens cases without cleaning. Change lens cases every 1-3 months, and monitor solutions and lenses’ expiry dates. Do not sleep in lenses unless specifically recommended, and disregard lenses at the prescribed time, even when they may seem fine.

Keep Your Eyes Open and Wear Safely

New wearers of contact lenses should progressively increase the wearing time, beginning with a couple of hours and then increasing with the improvement of comfort. Do not put on longer contact lenses than what is recommended, and do not share contact lenses. In case of red eyes, irritation or sudden change of vision, take off lenses and consult a doctor immediately. Follow-up visits with an eye specialist on a regular basis are used to check the lens fit, eye health, and prescription changes to ensure long-term safety.

Conclusion

The process of adapting to contact lenses may require several days; however, with these five tips in mind, it will be a healthy and comfortable process. Contact lenses are an easy way to live with, when used with patience and technique, as they provide the clearest vision and a newfound confidence each day.
