Why Safety Should Influence Your NYC Borough Choice

September 29, 2025 by Sam H.

When one thinks about New York City, the first thing that comes to their mind is a buzzing city with great infrastructure, world-class dining, cultural diversity, and numerous opportunities. But like any other city, New York City has places that may not be safe for everyone.

So if you are planning to move to New York, one factor that should never be overlooked when deciding where to live is to ensure that you choose a neighborhood that is safe and secure.

New York offers you five boroughs to choose from, which include Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Each of these boroughs has a different and unique lifestyle. However, your main concern should be choosing the safest borough in NYC, because it can really impact how your stay in the city will be.

Here are a few reasons why safety should be your top priority when choosing a borough in New York City.

1. Safety Impacts the Quality of Life

One of the biggest factors that affects our quality of life is a good peace of mind. But imagine staying in a borough that has no safety at all. Won’t your peace of mind be affected?

Such places can really take a toll on your daily life. By staying in unsafe neighborhoods with high crime rates, you might find it difficult to go out for a night stroll, use public transport, or even be scared to let children play outside.

But when you choose a safer area, your quality of life improves as well, with good community bonds, more outdoor activities, and a lot of play areas for your kids. By considering safety, you are choosing a place that supports you and your family’s well-being.

2. Crime Rates Vary by Borough

A house is a place where you are supposed to feel safe and secure. But staying in a place that has high crime rates will not exactly leave you feeling safe. In New York, the crime rates vary from one borough to another.

For example, when you choose Manhattan or Brooklyn, there are streets with good neighborhoods and low crime rates, but there are also a few streets with frequent incidents.

The Bronx has a slightly higher crime rate, whereas Queens and Staten Island crime rates are typically lower. By comparing and understanding the crime rates of each borough, you can choose a place that would suit your family and you the best.

3.  Safety and Transportation

The place you choose to stay should allow you to safely move around the area, and public transport plays a very important role in this. For many New Yorkers, public transport is their mode of transport to offices, shops, and any place they want to go.

A borough with safer public transport options, such as Staten Island’s ferry system, is more likely to make travelling easier for you. A place with safe transport options also allows your loved ones to enjoy visiting your home, thereby also improving your social network.

4. Emergency Services and Community Resources

Another factor that affects how safe your area is knowing how effectively emergency services respond to your area. Having a good hospital and fire station nearby is essential in case of any emergencies.

Areas with police precincts nearby are also less prone to robbery or any other crimes. By taking these factors into consideration when choosing a borough in New York City, you can ensure that you are prepared for any unexpected situations.

Final Thoughts

While New York City is one of the best places to live in, there are areas that do not offer much safety. So before you choose the area that is right for you, ensure that you give the first priority to safety. By doing so, you are choosing a place that will surely feel like home, providing you with peace of mind and security.
