Steps to Take After Suffering a Personal Injury

September 22, 2025 by Sam H.

Westchester County is in New York, and almost a million people live there. It is right above New York City, so a lot of people go back and forth every day. Some go to work, and some go for fun. On the west side, we have the Hudson River sitting pretty. People like to go to places like Pierson Park or the Marshlands Conservancy to walk around or sit by the water.

If you live in Westchester and you get hurt, like in a car crash, or if you get hurt at work, then you might need help from a Westchester County personal injury lawyer. They are the people who know what to do when someone gets injured.

Now, let’s go step by step and talk about exactly what you should do after getting hurt so you don’t miss anything important:

Get a Complete Medical Assessment

The very first thing is always your health. If you are in an accident, get immediate medical attention. You should also get a thorough check-up done, even if you think you feel fine. Sometimes your body tricks you because adrenaline makes you not feel pain right away.

Injuries like whiplash, concussions, brain injuries, or internal bleeding can be hidden at first. If you wait too long, they can get worse and even be dangerous. A doctor can run tests, give you scans, and tell you exactly what’s wrong.

Plus, the medical records they write down are super important later because they prove you got hurt from the accident. Without those records, it’s hard to prove your case.

Document the Accident Scene

Once you have made sure that your health is fine, document the scene of the accident. Try to collect pictures and videos of what could have caused the accident, the area in general, your injuries and damages, etc.

Talk to people who might have witnessed the accident and get their contact info. Their statements as a neutral party could be beneficial for a claim.

Also, get the contact information of anyone involved in the accident with you. Suppose they were the cause of the accident; get their insurance info as well.

Report the Incident

After you get help, you need to make sure the accident is reported to the right people. If it’s a car accident, call the police and have them write a report. If it’s at work, you need to tell your boss right away.

If it happens on someone else’s property, like slipping in a store, you tell the store manager or owner. Reports are proof, and without proof, it’s harder to show that the accident really happened. Sometimes the law even says you must report it, so don’t skip this part.

Talk to a Personal Injury Lawyer

Lawyers already understand the local judges and the rules in New York, which makes them helpful. Many lawyers give free consultations, which means you can call them, explain what happened, and see what they say without paying. The earlier you call, the better, because they can start protecting your case right away.

Key Takeaways

Get a complete medical assessment after the injury.
Thoroughly document the scene.
Report the accident to the police and your insurance.
Get a lawyer for yourself, especially if you’re planning to file a claim.
If the accident happened at work, report to the appropriate office.
