When Self-Care Isn’t Enough: Recognizing the Hidden Signs of Burnout

July 12, 2025 by Sam H.

Self-care has become a huge topic in recent years, with people realizing the importance of putting their well-being first and engaging in practices that support their mental health. Things like spending time in nature, taking a warm bath, and digital detoxes can be helpful, particularly when people have busy and demanding jobs, but sometimes this isn’t enough. Burnout is a growing issue, with people becoming a prominent issue, with people reaching a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion as a result of prolonged stress. This post will look at a few hidden signs of burnout that you need to be aware of.

Emotional Detachment

One of the most notable signs of burnout that you need to watch out for is emotional detachment. When people have undergone a prolonged period of significant stress, they often “check out” emotionally and find themselves to be emotionally numb, even with the people that they love. If you find that you no longer experience emotions like joy and excitement in daily life, it is a sign that you are burning out and need to take a break.

Tired Upon Waking

Another clear sign that you are burning out is if you wake up and still feel tired. Sleep should be restorative, so if you feel tired upon waking and early in the morning despite a good night’s sleep, then this is a signal that you are exhausted and need more time to relax and recharge. Additionally, many people who are burnt out find it hard to get to and/or stay asleep despite feeling exhausted.

Turning to Drugs/Alcohol

When people are physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted, they sometimes turn to drugs and/or alcohol as a crutch. These can provide temporary relief, but it is a slippery slope that can lead to addiction. This is common in high-pressure jobs, with healthcare professionals estimated to be 10-15% more likely to develop substance issues, and up to 24% of lawyers struggling with alcohol abuse. If you are worried about drugs and/or alcohol misuse, you can find programs for treating professionals in addiction rehab with evidence-based therapies and resources. There is also a focus on confidentiality so that you do not have to worry about your professional reputation.

Irritability

Another telltale sign of burnout is irritability. If you find yourself getting frustrated by even minor things or you lash out at those around you, it could be due to prolonged stress. If you are more reactive than normal, you will benefit from taking a break that allows you to focus on your well-being and keep stress at bay.

These are a few hidden signs that you are burnt out and would benefit from a restorative break. Burnout is a growing issue and is common in high-pressure jobs. Burnout should not be ignored as it can lead to significant physical and mental harm, so it is important to be aware of the signs and find ways to lower your stress levels and recharge your batteries.
