Shelf Life and Expiration Dates on Cosmetics

July 21, 2025 by Classystaff

How many of you have a pile of old make-up lying around? If you do…it’s time to throw it out! Cosmetics do have a shelf life and many come with expiration dates printed on them. By using old make-up is unhealthy and the product may not perform as intended. In addition, make sure you’re storing all products correctly and in a safe manner.

Did you know that you should be tossing your opened mascara after 3 months? Yes, that’s right! Get rid of it. Using old mascara can cause eye infections and other health-related problems. Did you know that lip products expire too? That’s right, you can get a bacterial infection by using old or infected products.

The FDA has a website that gives the consumer some great information and guidelines to follow. The U.S.A. does not have laws regarding shelf life and expiration dates but manufacturers are responsible for educating the consumer and are responsible in making sure their products are safe to use. As a consumer it’s your job to read all packaging information (including the fine print) and to go through your cosmetics on a regular basis….getting rid of the items that are getting too old.

Another good rule of thumb to keep in mind…..you should NEVER share your make-up with friends or family members!!! Bacteria and infections can be transmitted by sharing these type’s of items. There’s nothing wrong by telling someone NO…YOU CAN’T USE THIS! By protecting yourself you’re protecting them.

Every 3-6 months go through your items and get rid of anything that’s old or expired. As always, properly dispose of them in a bag that is tied shut and in a garbage can. Keep cosmetics out of the reach of children and pets. Part of using beauty products is educating yourself on their proper storage and use.
