Sharp Looks, Smooth Operations: How to Choose Housekeeping Uniforms

July 30, 2025 by Sam H.

If you’re in the hospitality industry, you know that how your housekeeping team looks can say a lot about your standards. Being dressed in a well-chosen uniform will make your staff look professional and coordinated, and guests will feel confident they’re in good hands. It’s a simple yet effective way to reassure them that everything from the room’s cleanliness to the overall service is being taken care of.

But what makes a housekeeping uniform “well chosen”? Well, it’s more than just looks. It means choosing attire that’s practical, comfortable for long shifts and in line with your hotel’s style and brand. It should allow your staff to move freely and do their job with ease while looking clean, neat and welcoming to guests.

If you’re in the process of choosing housekeeping uniforms but don’t know where to start, here are a few things to consider to help you make the right choice.

Modern Design

Housekeeping attire has come a long way from the traditional, often stiff and formal style of the past. Modern and comfortable housekeeping uniforms incorporate more casual and comfortable pieces like t-shirts, polos and chino pants, for a fresh and relaxed look without sacrificing professionalism. These updated styles make it easier for staff to move and work efficiently and feel more comfortable and confident on the job.

Choose the Right Fabric

Housekeeping staff work hard, often moving quickly from room to room and handling everything from cleaning products to unexpected messes. That’s why the fabric of their uniform matters. Choosing a stain-resistant fabric helps keep uniforms looking fresh and professional even during the busiest shifts.

Breathability is just as important, especially when staff are working long hours in warm or humid conditions. Lightweight, breathable fabrics help regulate body temperature, keep your team cool and comfortable, which can make a big difference in how they feel and perform throughout the day. And let’s not forget practicality; uniforms that resist wrinkles and can withstand frequent washing are easier to maintain, saving time and hassle for both staff and managers.

Some of the best fabrics for housekeeping attire are:

* Polyester blends – Tough, wrinkle-free and fast drying. Often mixed with cotton or spandex for extra comfort and flexibility.
* Cotton-polyester – Softness of cotton with the durability and easy care benefits of polyester.
* Microfiber – Light, breathable and naturally stain resistant – great for active days.
* Spandex or elastane (in small amounts) – Adds stretch for better movement and comfort.

Get the Fit Right

Remember, housekeeping is a physically demanding job that requires a lot of bending, lifting, reaching and walking throughout the day. Because of this, uniforms need to fit well and allow for easy movement. For example, a shirt that’s too tight will ride up during work and limit movement, and buttons will pop open at the wrong time. On the other hand, a shirt that’s too loose and made from heavy fabric can leave staff feeling overwhelmed and overheated. These kinds of uniform problems aren’t just annoying – they can also make employees feel uneasy and less confident while on the job.

Additionally, since everyone has a unique body shape and size, it’s crucial to offer uniforms that fit a diverse range of individuals comfortably. When employees feel good in what they’re wearing, they’re more motivated to deliver exceptional, 5-star service. This boost in morale not only enhances the guest experience but also encourages staff loyalty and reduces turnover, benefiting your brand in the long run.

Choose the Color and Details Wisely

When selecting colors for your housekeeping attire, it’s important to think beyond aesthetics and consider practicality. Housekeeping is hands-on, and uniforms are bound to face daily wear and tear, including spills, dust, and cleaning chemicals. That’s why darker shades like navy and charcoal are popular choices. They’re timeless, professional, and do a much better job at hiding stains compared to lighter or brighter colors.

These classic tones also have the advantage of not going out of style, so they’re a smart long-term investment. To keep things visually appealing and on-brand, consider incorporating your business colors in subtle but effective ways. Embroidery, trim details, or lapel pins can add personality and tie the look to your hotel or resort’s identity. You might also include your logo on the shirt or apron to reinforce your brand presence while keeping the overall look clean and cohesive.

Involve Your Staff in the Design Process

Involving your staff in the design process is important for both practical and psychological reasons. On a practical level, your team members are the ones who will wear and work in the uniforms daily, so their insights can help identify what’s comfortable, functional, and appropriate for their roles.

Psychologically, when staff feel their opinions are valued and considered, it fosters a greater sense of ownership and satisfaction. This inclusion can boost morale, encourage pride in their appearance, and increase overall acceptance of the final design. Ultimately, collaboration leads to smarter choices and a more cohesive, confident team.

Work With a Reliable Supplier

Choosing a supplier who’s got a good reputation and real experience in making uniforms makes a big difference. They’ll better understand what you need and deliver quality products you can trust. It’s a good idea to look at reviews, read testimonials, or even ask for references so you can get a feel for how reliable they are and how happy their past clients have been.

Also, be sure to check if they have a minimum order quantity and whether they can grow with your team. Some suppliers require large minimum orders, which might be tricky if your team is smaller.

And don’t forget to ask about how long it usually takes to make and ship the uniforms, so you can make sure it fits with your timeline.

Focus on Value Instead of Price

While price is always a factor, you should focus on overall value. Cheap uniforms might seem like a steal at first, but if the fabric isn’t great or the stitching falls apart easily, they won’t last long. They could fade, stretch out, or wear down after just a few washes. That means you’ll end up having to replace them more often, which can quickly add up, not just in dollars, but also in the hassle of placing new orders and dealing with disruptions.

Higher-quality uniforms may come with a higher initial price tag, but the durability, comfort, and better fit often lead to longer-lasting garments that maintain a polished look.
