Back in June I started having some minor foot pain with light swelling. When it first started we were on vacation and I thought it was from doing too much walking. Let’s face it, while on vacation we all typically do more walking and activities than we usually do when we’re at home. Over the next 4 days that pain containued to get worse and the swelling was engulfing my foot.
The day after we got home from vacation I could barely walk. The pain was almost unbearable and the swelling made it impossible to put on a shoe. I knew it was time to see a doctor. I decided to go to the orthopedic walk-in clinic in our area. No appointment is needed and they have on-site x-rays. They typically see you pretty quickly.
After a 45 minute wait and obtaining basic xrays…they told me they couldn’t see any fractures. They could see all of the swelling and discoloration, but no fractures. They had no idea why I was having so much pain and what was causing this misery. They ordered an MRI for 4 days later. In the meantime they put my foot in an air cast boot and told me no weight-bearing activities until further notice.
The day after my MRI I got a phone call to come back into the orthopedic clinic that they had found something and wanted to discuss it. I went in. Low and behold…I have 2 fractures in my foot. Since I didn’t fall or have any type of accident they’re calling them “stress fractures”. One is in my heel and the other an ankle bone. Wow…now we know why I’ve been in so much pain!!!
I’m currently still in the air cast boot and waiting for my appointment with the foot and ankle surgeon. I’ve had fractures before and always needed surgery. I hope this time that my body will heal on it’s own and hopefully I can avoid the operating table anytime soon. So….I sit and wait for the next appointment.
