We’ve been bird watching the past 4 months in our backyard. We have Robin’s, House Finches, Sparrows, Cardinals, Doves, Blackbirds and several others calling our backyard their home. In total we have 4 bird houses and 9 nests that we’ve currently been watching.
The nest that I’m showing to you today belongs to a set of Robins. There’s 4 baby birds squeezed into that nest. Boy…those babies are quite loud when they are looking to be fed and trust me…they’re getting fed a lot! Mom and Dad take turns bringing food back to the nest 24 hours a day! They’re busy but very good parents!
One thing that I think people don’t realize is how “unattractive” babies are. They’re born almost completely naked once they hatch out of their shells. Their eyes are closed and open several days later. You start seeing the “fluff” coming in on their skin 2-3 days later and within 5 days you start to see the growth of feathers.
Three of the four babies opened their eyes yesterday. If you look closely you can see some of the feathers starting to come in. As soon as Mom or Dad approaches the nest their mouths fly open and they get noisy trying to get attention to grab that food. The parents ONLY stay a minute or two…just long enough to feed and they’re out again hunting for food.
