Every year we have birds make nests all around our property, including the front and back porches. On the front porch two of my four hanging baskets currently have nests with eggs or hatchlings made by finches. On the back porch we have a large Robin’s nest with 4 hatchlings. These hatchlings are currently about 12 days old.
Over the course of the past 12 days we’ve observed mom and dad going back and forth to the nest to feed the babies numerous times a day. One of them feeds the babies every 15-20 minutes all day and night long!!! Now that the babies are 12 days old they’re requiring more and more food and have become quite noisy too!
One thing that has really surprised us with this particular Mom and Dad Robin is their aggressive behavior and I mean AGGRESSIVE! We’ve had dozens of Robins over the years make nests and raise babies on our property and NONE of them have acted like this!!!
This particular couple dive bombs us any time we come out our back door. We need to go out the back door to get into the swimming pool, go to our veggie garden, do yard work, take out the trash, etc. We don’t go to that side of the porch to even bother them. Nope…we stay clear on the other side of our back porch. However, that doesn’t matter.
Mom and Dad dive bomb us and chase us off the porch. They will dive bomb us out in our backyard doing yard work or even while we’re in the pool. It’s like they’ve taken over the back porch and yard. They come within inches of our heads when dive bombing us! It’s quite scary to be chased by two angry birds while we’re outside.
As soon as those hatchlings fledge that nest…it’s coming down and the entire area will be pressure washed and hosed down. This will be the LAST TIME we ever let a pair of Robins make a nest on our back porch. Previous years…never a problem. This has taught us a lesson. Every bird or pair of birds can be different. They can be aggressive when they have a nest full of eggs or babies. If you don’t want to deal with that…remove the nest early on…before she has the opportunity to lay the eggs.
From now on…we won’t be allowing anymore bird’s nests on our front or back porches. They ruined that. They will have to continue to make them out further in our yard and away from our house!!!
