Ships and Barges Traveling the Delaware River
We go back and forth from central Pennsylvania down to the south Jersey Shore several times a year. When traveling we avoid Philadelphia by going through Chester Pennsylvania. You’ll find a large bridge, the Barry Commuter Bridge (a toll bridge) that crosses the Delaware River. This area is very congested with traffic with multiple driving lanes. Be prepared.
Every time we go across the bridge we can see various industrial buildings, shipping docks and barges either hooked up to the dock or passing through the Delaware River to get where they’re going. There are several big shipping and ports right in that area. You can often see the barges getting loaded or unloaded as they sit there.
One of these days I would like to take a little detour and go down to the waterfront on each side of the river to just explore the area. I bet there’s a lot to see! I’m sure that some local recreation takes place out on the water…but it’s something we can’t see from our advantage point as we’re passing through. Just the big ships and boats are visible.
