Hand Painted Cat Pet Mom Clam Shells Seashells

We love cats and have adopted several over the years. Our current boy Romeo is the sweetest kitty that we’ve ever owned! He’s 4 1/2 years old and extremely loveable! He’s a valuable member of our family and spoiled rotten as he should be!

I like to volunteer my time and donate to local cat rescue groups. A few weeks ago I painted several cat themed seashells and donated them to a fundraiser that one of the groups was sponsoring. Wow, everyone loved them! Today…I’m going to share two of those designs with you. No template or pattern is needed.

You’ll need 4″ to 5″ wide clam shells collected from a beach. Wash them in warm water with Dawn Liquid Dish Soap. It does the best job at removing sand, debris and fishy odors. Rinse with clean water and let them dry overnight.

Paint your desired color across the shell for the background. I used metallic acrylic paints from a paint kit that I purchased from Amazon. The kit contains 18 pearl and metallic finish acrylic paints. You can brush them on (like I show in my photo) or use them for paint pouring. I use them both ways in my projects. Metallic paints take a little longer to dry…about 90 minutes or so.

Use a pencil to lightly write your wordage onto the seashells. I wrote CAT MOM on one shell and My Kids (Heart-Love) Me on the other one. I used a white fine-tip acrylic paint marker to do block lettering on each one. Once dry, I used a black fine-tip acrylic paint marker to add design work and outlined each letter. I recommend the fine-tip Acrylic Paint Markers by Tooli-Art. You will use a red one to add the heart and a black one to add the paw prints. The center of the letter A has a pink nose and black whiskers if you want to add that. Let all of the paint dry for a good 3-4 hours.

Seal the painted design work by brushing-on 1-2 light coats of Clear Mod Podge Sealer. I like using one that gives the seashells a glossy finish. I just love that shine! Mod Podge goes on white but will dry crystal clear. Let them dry overnight. This protects the paint and will allow you display your beautiful pieces of art inside or outside of your home.
