Large Farms and Back Roads in Lancaster County
Lancaster County is known for being a farming community. You’ll find hundreds of Amish and regular farms. During the spring, summer and fall season you’ll often see the farmers out working in the fields. One thing that has always impressed me was the size of these farms! Some are quite large in size!!!
While on a recent road trip we spent an afternoon driving around on the back roads through Lancaster County. We were visiting some of the area’s covered bridges, antique stores, farmer’s markets, quilt shops and other small attractions. It’s amazing what you will stumble across when driving around on the back roads!
For an example – We sat for 20 minutes as one farmer moved his cattle from one pasture to another. That meant they had to cross the road. Lucky for us…we were in no hurry and got to watch as they wrangled them from one area to another.
On another road we watched an Amish guy work on his buggy which was sitting alongside the road. It appeared that he was having an issue with one of the wheels. Inside the buggy sat the wife while 2 children played alongside the road. Don’t worry, they weren’t in danger of oncoming traffic.
About 10 minutes later we ran across a little Amish-run produce stand which sat along the road at the end of their driveway. We parked and checked out all of the goodies they had to offer. We purchased several fresh produce items and a little Amish-made doll for my niece. Prices were excellent and much better than those found in a tourist-style gift store.
When you’re taking a road trip…take the time to check out some of the back roads and small towns along the way. You never know what you may find.
