8 Tips for Chronic Back Pain Relief
For twenty years I’ve suffered with chronic back pain. Over those years I’ve seen several doctors about it. All of them have recommended physical therapy and/or surgery to help me get some relief. I’ve declined the surgical option as a lot of people that I’ve spoken to have told me they still suffer with pain.

Over the years I’ve tried a lot of things to help get relief. Some have helped and some have made things worse. I’m NOT a healthcare professional and ONLY sharing my personal opinion and experience with those who read the TCC blog. Always discuss your medical issues with a doctor before trying any of these suggestions.
1. Walking – When it comes to physical activity…stick with low-impact activities like walking. When walking you want to wear orthopedic correct footwear that provide support and cushioning. Walk on even surfaces, not unpaved areas. Always walk with a partner. I personally wear Skechers Go Walk Sneakers which I love!
2. Posture – The majority of Americans have poor posture when they get older in age. Try to improve your posture by sitting up straight, wearing an OTC (over-the-counter) back support brace, a posture correcting bra (for females), etc. Correcting and supporting your posture can help relieve back pain!
3. Heating Pad – Heat applied to the area can help reduce pain. Make sure you use ONLY the low-heat setting. People can and do indeed suffer from burns caused by heating pads.
4. Mattress – Sleep on a modern mattress! You would be surprised at how many people are sleeping on old, broken-down mattresses! Get a mattress that offers you support and cushioning comfort. There are oodles of different brands out there. If you haven’t purchased a new mattress in the past 5 years…it’s time to get one! Ask your doctor and other people for recommendations before you purchase. Always try out a new mattress (in-store) before buying one.
5. Massage – Have you tried massage yet? If you can’t go out to get a massage you can purchase massage devices that can be used in your home. Massage therapy can help to relax the muscles in your back which can help to relieve pain.
6. Chiropractor – I have several friends and family members who see a Chiropractor regularly for treatment. They swear they get relief with the back adjustments he gives them. I personally don’t see one due to my personal condition. However, I did want to suggest it as an option.
7. Hot Tub – A few years ago we splurged and had a hot tub installed in our home. It was a great investment. The heat and water help to relax me which in turns helps to relieve pain. You can purchase one that is hard-wired and requires specific plumbing or get one of those new inflatable and portable hot tubs that are affordable. If this isn’t an option for you…try soaking in your bathtub 3-4 times a week.
8. OTC Medication – You can purchase OTC (over-the-counter) medications in the form of pills, liquids, topical patches, topical sprays, creams, etc. to help relieve pain. Always speak to your healthcare professional or a licensed pharmacist to see what he or she recommends.
When it comes to chronic back pain and temporary relief…I use a combination of different things. I will often rotate what I’m using and I’m not afraid to try out new things. Anything to give me some relief!
