Tips on Cleaning Your Hair Accessories
Hair Accessories need to be cleaned 3-4 times a year depending on how often you wear them. They get “gunked” up with oils from your hair and from hair treatment products like hairspray. That’s not to mention the day-to-day germs that they come in contact with. Keeping them clean keeps your hair and scalp clean…and extends the life of the accessory.
When we’re talking about hair accessories think about all of those hair clips, barrettes, headbands, decorative bobby pins, combs, snaps and other items. You can include hair brushes and combs too! Now that the summer season is over…it’s a great time to clean them.

You can clean your hair accessories one of two different ways:
1. You can wipe them down with a wet cotton cloth and a little bit of liquid soap or wipe them down with pre-moistened cleaning wipes. This is a great method for items that are delicate or contain fabric. You never want to soak those in water, so spot-cleaning is best.
2. You can fill up your bathroom sink with liquid soap and water. Place them into the water and let them soak for 30-60 minutes. Rinse with clean water. If you have any stubborn oil or dirt on the item…try to lightly scrub it away with an old toothbrush. Don’t scrub too hard as you don’t want to cause scratches or damage to the item.
After cleaning…lay them all out in a single layer on a cotton towel to air dry. You want them to dry within 1 hour (for metal accessories) or within 3 hours for plastic. Never let water sit on metal for more than an hour…as it can cause damage.
Cleaning Hair Brushes and Combs
I like to clean all of our hair brushes and combs on a monthly basis. They get gunked up quickly and should be cleaned often. Fill up your bathroom sink with warm soapy water (I use a liquid antibacterial soap) and let them soak for 1-2 hours. Rinse with clean water. Lay them out on a cotton towel to air dry. If any of your combs or brushes are missing bristles or teeth…it’s time to replace them with new ones.
