My grandson had a birthday a few months ago. The theme of his party was Superhero and we decided to make a few tabletop decorations and party favors to fit within that theme. These clam shells seashells were hand painted. The designs are really simple to do. I picked his 3 favorite superheros to feature: Spiderman, Captain America and Batman. If you don’t have access to large clam shells, the designs can be easily painted onto smooth river rocks too.

Supplies Needed:
3″ to 5″ wide Clam Shells
Acrylic Craft Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers
Clear Mod Podge Glossy Finish Sealer
Foam Brush
Pencil
Black Sharpie Marker
Base coat each clam shell in red or white. I had to use 2 coats of paint to get the coverage that I needed with 35 minutes of drying time between coats.
Use the photograph for reference. Lightly sketch the design onto the shell using a pencil. These are simple designs! You don’t have to be a perfect sketch artist to do this!
To keep things really simple…I used a set of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers to color-in each design. These markers contain acrylic paint (they’re not kiddie markers) and feature dual-ended tips (one medium and one fine). They don’t require any priming, no dripping messes, no clogged tips and no foul paint odors! Plus, they dry fairly quick!
Once you the seashell has fully dried…you need to seal-in the paint. Use a foam brush to brush-on a light coat or two of Clear Mod Podge Glossy Finish Sealer. It will dry crystal clear.
After the clam shell has dried you need to flip it over and write your birthday message on the backside using a black Sharpie Marker. We wrote each kid’s name, the date and the Birthday Boy’s Name. Each child got to take his/her painted seashell home after the party as a party favor keepsake! Plus, they added nice table-top decor during the birthday party.
