Beach Erosion in North Wildwood
We’ve been going to North Wildwood for the past 25 years. North Wildwood is different than Wildwood or Wildwood Crest. In my honest opinion, it has its own vibe…much more relaxed and laid back. It’s my favorite place to visit and stay when I’m visiting the Jersey Shore. The beaches are beautiful and guess what? Free! No beach passes required!
Over the years we’ve been watching the beach erosion and replenishment projects. It seems like every 5 years or so they go in and do a massive rebuilding of the beach. Then mother nature takes over and produces the beach erosion. It’s a never ending cycle and it’s the price you pay when you live at the beach.
In 2024 we watched them a year ago replenish the beaches in North Wildwood. We watched the entire process over the course of a week. They pump in sand from pipes and barges several hundred yards offshore to build up the beach with sand and dunes. It was a 24 hours a day process. Let me tell you…those workers work HARD…day and night to get the job done.
Unfortunately…several big storms rolled through over the course of 4 months. After those 4 months the beaches displayed massive erosion again! In my top photo…there’s usually at least 25 to 50 yards of sandy beach there during high tide. As you can see…the high tide now comes up and splashes against the manmade seawall. In my second photograph…basically the same thing. There’s 50-75 yards of beach that’s now missing!
North Wildwood and Wildwood will be undergoing another beach replenishment project I believe this year. In my opinion, the sooner, the better. It doesn’t matter if you live there or visit (play) there…we want big beautiful beaches!
