How to Properly Store Cocoa Powder

How to Properly Store Cocoa PowderCocoa Powder will last for years if it’s properly stored in your kitchen or pantry. I use a lot of it in my household, so to save money I like to purchase it in bulk. Once I get it home, I separate it into smaller containers for storage. Here’s some important tips to remember if you’re going to be storing cocoa powder in your kitchen.

To store cocoa powder you want to start out with fresh product. In other words, buy the freshest that you can get. Inspect it to make sure that there’s no bugs, large clumps or moisture inside the container or bag. Transfer the cocoa powder into a BPA-FREE air-tight container or food-safe storage bag.

When using food-safe containers…look for ones with a silicone gasket-type of seal.  I like using Lock-n-Lock Containers. That helps to prevent air and moisture from getting into the container. Wash the container and make sure it’s thoroughly dry before pouring the cocoa powder inside.  If you’re going to use a food-safe storage bag….I recommend using bags that can be vacuum sealed. Label with contents and the date.

Let’s talk about the best place to store it. Inside a pantry or kitchen cabinet is best…that way it’s shielded from light. Don’t store above or near your range or oven. That particular area in your kitchen gets too hot and moisture accumulates in that area. Look for a dry and dark place for the best storage, I store it in my pantry.

I’ve successfully stored cocoa  powder for several years by taking the time to store it properly.
