How to Look After Your Health as Your Parents Age

December 19, 2024 by Classystaff

How to Look After Your Health as Your Parents AgeWatching your parents age can be incredibly distressing, especially if they have developed a condition such as dementia or Parkinson’s. However, rather than allowing your own health to deteriorate alongside theirs, here are some top tips to stay fit and well.

1. Eat Well

Between rushing to take them to appointments and getting them out of bed in the morning, it can be impossible to find time to cook a full meal with vegetables. However, this does not mean that you should stuff yourself with fast food and other junk that will make you feel even worse and sap your energy levels. Instead, you should consider eating with your parents, giving them meals that have high nutritional value, including plenty of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

2. Look at Care Homes

However much you might want them to remain at home, sometimes, it is best to look for care homes for your parents as they age. These care homes can allow you to limit your stress and the impact that being a carer is having on your health. Not only this, but your parents might be able to get the best care for them. You should look for great care homes in your area and beyond. These could include homes like fairviewcourt.co.uk.

3. Stay Hydrated

It is more difficult to stay hydrated when you are extremely busy, especially if you do not often have time to switch the kettle and sit down to sip a cup of coffee or tea. To ensure that you stay hydrated and avoid dizzy spells and headaches, you should carry around a water bottle with you at all times. You might even consider investing in one that tells you how much you have drunk, or a smart option that can give you hydration reminders. There are also many mobile apps that can support your hydration habits.

4. Take a Break

Taking a break can often seem wasteful and you might spend the entire time thinking about everything that you could be doing. However, without a break, you might get ill and find that you cannot give your full focus or energy to any task. This means that you should schedule in breaks no matter what you are doing, and you should use these breaks as time to fully switch off and disconnect from the tasks at hand, rather than catch up with work and other points on your to-do list.

5. Socialize With Others

Socializing with your parents might not be what it once was, especially if they have a memory condition. To allow your heart to be light and to reconnect with the other people in your life, you should try to find the time to socialize with your friends and other relatives. This can help you ground yourself and see outside of your current situation, as well as hear the news, have a laugh, and let off steam for a while, even if you simply invite them over to watch movies.

6. Think of Your Mental Health

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, though. To check that you stay in tip-top form and you can remain positive, you should go for nature walks, journal, and try out yoga and meditation. If you are still struggling after some self-care time, you should head to your doctor. They might be able to arrange for therapy sessions for you, or prescribe you with medication, such as ant-depressants or beta blockers.
