The Importance of Spay and Neutering Cats and Dogs

Last year our daughter and her family adopted a little puppy who they named Enzo, short for Lorenzo. When they adopted him he was 12 weeks old. He’s a pure bred Corgi and adorable! Just like all puppies…they can be a handful until trained. To get him trained she took him to dog obedience training class. The classes lasted for 8 weeks and he learned how to be a very good puppy during that time.

When he was about 5 months old she took him in to get neutered. All dogs and cats should be spayed and neutered unless you are a licensed and experienced breeder. If you can’t afford it…then you shouldn’t be a pet owner…PERIOD. You can find low cost and no cost options in a lot of areas. Not only is it important to cut down breeding but it does improve the health of your animal. We all want them to live long and healthy lives! I can not stress this enough!

The Importance of Spay and Neutering Cats and Dogs

These days I see many people adopting and rescuing cats and dogs but NOT getting them fixed! I’m sorry, but part of being a responsible pet owner is getting them spayed and neutered. If you can’t afford it, then let someone else adopt or rescue them. There’s no excuse to have all of this breeding going on with pets ending up in shelters or on the streets. That is 100% avoidable!

After Enzo’s neutering he had to wear an inflatable cone of shame to keep from licking the surgical site. He wore it for a little over a week. The first 2-3 days he seemed to mind it but quickly adapted to having to wear it. Make sure you take your pet back to the vet for all follow-ups as they’re equally important! You want to make sure everything is healing up fine with no post-operative infections.

Another great benefit to spay and neutering your pet is that it helps to calm them down with better behavior. You’ll find that they become a much better pet!
