How to Keep Dough from Sticking to Cookie Cutters

How to Keep Dough from Sticking to Cookie CuttersHow many of you enjoy making homemade rolled-out cookies? I know I do…especially during the Fall and Holiday Seasons. Sugar Cookies and Sand Tarts are 2 of my family’s favorite cookies…especially when topped with frosting and sprinkles! The thinner the cookie, the better too!

I’m often asked… How do you keep the dough from sticking to your cookie cutters? Well, I’m going to tell you!

First…I like to roll out my dough on a silicone non-stick baking mat. I bought several of them from Amazon. You can roll out your dough on them and bake on them too! I find the non-stick silicone baking sheets to be better than rolling it out onto a dough board. That’s my personal opinion of course!

Next….I fill up a pie plate (pan) with all-purpose flour. I dip my cookie cutter into the all-purpose flour and then shake the excess off back into the pie pan. Do this every time before cutting out the cookie!  The dough peels off the cookie cutter with ease without sticking!!!

If I’m working with a really “sticky” type of batter…I’ll spray the cookie cutters with non-stick baking spray instead of dipping them into the all-purpose flour. You don’t want to saturdate it with the baking spray…just a little bit of spray will do and it should last for several cut-out impressions. Just re-spray as needed.

Here’s an additional tip: I don’t put my cookie cutters into the dishwasher even though they state that they’re dishwasher safe. I hand wash them in warm soapy water, rinse and let them air dry for an hour. I then go back and towel dry if needed. I find that the dishwasher can damage them and/or cause rusting. I like to use vintage ones that I have in my personal collection when I’m making cookies.
