How to Freeze Milk with Tips

How to Freeze Milk with TipsHow many of you keep a small container of frozen milk in the freezer for emergency use? I do! I keep 2-5 single-serve containers of milk in my freezer at all times. I started doing this back during the Covid lock down when I couldn’t run out to the store every few days to purchase more.

Freezing milk is a simple process! I like to purchase it in single-serving plastic bottles that fit nicely on the inside of my upright freezer door or stack nicely on a shelf. Always purchase it before the sell by date expires! Fresher, the better. Some people freeze in cartons, containers and/or bags…but I find the plastic single-serve bottles the best way to go for our 2-person family.

You need to dump out 1″ of the milk from each bottle or container. This will allow for expansion and it’s critical that you do this! Place the cap back on. Label and date the bottle or container. You’ll want to thaw it out in your refrigerator for a few hours or overnight before using it. You can use it just like you would any other milk. In your breakfast cereal, morning coffee, in a recipe, etc.

Now…I do recommend that you rotate and replenish your emergency milk stash every 3-4 months. I’ll thaw out what remains and use it…while placing new ones into the freezer. Hence…make sure you DATE it. Keep rotating as time goes on.

Personally…I don’t like freezing milk in cardboard containers. I like plastic bottles and to cut down on space…I buy the single-serve plastic bottles at the store. Again, this is for emergency use…to hold us over until I can get out to the store again. You can freeze in larger bottles but they will take up a lot of space inside your freezer. Keep that in mind.
