Daylight Savings Time – Fall Emergency Checklist

October 31, 2024 by Sam H.

Daylight Savings Time - Fall Emergency ChecklistGet ready! Daylight Savings Time is on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024. For those of us who live in DST areas….we will be turning our clocks back by 1 hour. Remember, it’s Spring ahead and Fall back. In addition to changing your clocks it’s also a good time to do a few important things. We call it our DST Emergency Checklist. I’m sharing it with you today.

* Smoke Detectors – Make sure they all work (test them) and replace if necessary.
* Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Make sure they work (test them) and replace if necessary.
* Fire Extinguishers – Check the expiration date on all fire extinguishers inside your home and in vehicles.
* Security Cameras – Good time to make sure that all are working properly. Do repairs as needed.
* Outdoor Lighting – Do a walk-around your house & property. Make sure all lighting is working.
* Storm Drains and Rain Gutters – Make sure all are free of debris.
* Fire Hydrants – If you have one on your property make sure it’s not blocked. Ask the fire company to come out and check it.
* Chimney Cleaning – If you have one, time to get it cleaned for the season.
* Furnace Filter – Time to replace the filter in your furnace.
* First Aid Kit – Update and replace items in your first aid kit.
* Storm Kit – Update and replace items in your power outage storm kit. Every home should have one!!!
* Car & Truck Roadside Emergency Kits – We keep flashlights, road flares, a mini first-aid kit and other items in an emergency kit in each vehicle. Now is the time to update and replace those items.
* Emergency Cash – Keep a minimum of $100 cash somewhere in your home to be used ONLY in an emergency. I recommend that it be in smaller bills which would be easier to use in a true emergency.
* Home Evacuation Plan – This is the time to go over your home evacuation plan with every member of the family. Do fire drills, who to call in case of an emergency, teach kids where to find fire extinguishers and how to use them. This should be done several times throughout the year.

It’s important that you take the time to do these things 2-3 times a year. I recommend that you do them together as a family, so that everyone learns where items are located, how they’re used, etc. In the event of an emergency, you’ll be so happy that you were prepared.
