Raggedy Ann Painted Clam Shells Seashell Designs

Raggedy Ann Painted Clam Shells Seashell DesignsRaggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy are a classic from my childhood. They were two of my most beloved dolls. When I flip through all family photographs I often see them in the photo with me! I think most little girls from the 1960s through 1980s can relate.

My niece is having a baby girl in a few months. She’s decorating the baby’s nursery in childhood classics and asked me to paint a few Raggedy Ann and Andy shells for her to place in the room. I was more than happy to do it! Just remember, I’m not a professional artist…just a hobbyist.

If you enjoy painting on seashells or crafting with seashells…you’ll find over 150+ seashell craft projects right here on the Two Classy Chics blog! We will be sharing more seashell craft projects in the future too!

You’ll need large 4″ to 5″ wide clam shells collected from the beach. Wash them in Dawn Liquid Dish Soap to remove the sand, debris and fishy odors. Rinse with clean water and air dry overnight.

Base coat the seashells with 2 coats of white acrylic craft paint using a paint brush. Allow for 30-45 minutes of drying time between each coat. To keep things easy for me…I used a pack of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers that I purchased from Amazon. They have dual-ended tips (medium and a fine tip) and come in beautiful colors. There’s no priming, no drippy messes and no foul paint odors. These are not kiddie markers…they contain acrylic paint!

Use a pencil to make an oval shape on the shell. That will serve as the head. That’s the only thing I sketched ahead of time. Use the flesh-tone colored paint marker to color in the oval shape to serve as the head. While that’s drying use the red paint marker to make the hair. It’s just simple slashes going around the head to look like hair. Next…I added to the eyes, mouth and eye brows using the fine tip end of the black paint marker. Then I went back and added the red triangle nose and mouth. Use white to dot the inner eyes.

You can change up the sweater, dress, shirt…whatever. I used light and dark blue and varied it on each of the painted Raggedy Ann seashells.

Once all of the paint is dry…you’ll want to use a foam brush to brush-on 1-2 light coats of Clear Mod Podge Sealer  (glossy finish) to seal the paint and to protect the surface of the seashell. Let it dry for 2-3 hours. It will dry clear. That’s it, you’re done. I think they turned out adorable!
