How to Blanch and Freeze Green Beans

How to Blanch and Freeze Green BeansFreezing green beans is an easy process! It’s a great way to preserve those beans for a later time. In this post we will give you very easy steps on how to prepare, blanch and freeze your fresh green beans for later use. Once properly frozen…they will keep for up to 1 year. When you’re ready to cook them…you’ll cook them from frozen, no thawing is needed.

Step 1 – Wash all green beans in a colander in your clean kitchen sink. You want to remove all of the leaves, stems, dirt and debris.

Step 2 – Fill up a large bowl with cool water. Add a 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Set aside.

Step 3 – Cut the ends off of each bean. Then chop the beans into your desired length. Place the beans into the salt water as you go along. Repeat this process until all of the beans are sliced and ready.

Step 4 – Drain away the salt water and rinse the beans with clean water from your kitchen tap.

Step 5 – Add hot water to a large pot and bring it to a boil over medium-to-high heat. Add in 1-2 tbsp. of salt. The salt amount will depend on the amount of beans that you’re blanching. I like to use 1 tbsp. per quart. It doesn’t have to be exact!

Step 6 – Place the beans into the boiling water. Boil for 3 minutes. Turn off the heat. Pour the beans into the colander sitting in your clean kitchen sink with cold water running over them. You need to immediately cool them down to stop the cooking process.

Step 7 – Once the beans are cool lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Use paper towels or a clean cotten kitchen towel to pat some of the water off of them. You can let them air dry for 20-30 minutes too.

Step 8 – Place the beans in freezer safe storage bags or freezer safe storage containers. If you lack freezer space…I highly recommend that you freeze them in bags vs. containers. Purge out as much air that you can. Label and freeze for up to 1 year.
