Last month we were down in Wildwood, New Jersey for a week long vacation. While we were there we got to watch the beach replenishment project get underway. As a guy…I find projects like this interesting. I like equipment, tools and big machinery.
On day one we watched a large barge come down along the coastline from the north. It anchored a few hundred feet offshore in North Wildwood. There were smaller ships & boats surrounding it. At night…the entire area was lit up like a small city! You could see the workers walking around and working on the barge.
The next day we saw a bunch of diggers roll onto the beach. They went out into the surface to dig up and push the sand around. The sand was being pumped in via large metal pipes from that barge (digging it up out there) and pumping it into the shore. The one evening we sat there for 2 hours watching the guys work.
These guys worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in shifts. Seriously at 2, 3 and 4 AM while everyone was sleeping they were still out there working! It was really interesting watching them work and to check out how much progress they made every day. Within 4 days they got 4 blocks of the beach replenished. It’s so nice to have a beach again!!!
After we left a few friends told us that it took 10-12 days for them to finish the entire area they were working on. The beach is back by at least the length of a football field. This was desperately needed! Yay…finally done!
