Last month we spent the day in Cape May shopping at the Washington Street Mall. Cape May is a year-round shore town at the Jersey Shore. The Washington Street Mall is an outdoor mall where you walk outside from store to store down a brick walkway. It’s open year-round. During the summer tourist season finding a parking spot can be a real “bear”. If you’re visiting there June through September try visiting the mall during the non-peak weekday daytime hours.
Since you’ll be outside when walking from store to store you need to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. The Washington Street Mall doesn’t have any big chain stores or national retail stores like other malls. You’ll find mom & pop owned boutique stores, ice cream shops, gifts & souvenir stores, apparel boutiques, a pet store, coffee shop, locally-owned restaurants & cafes, plus more. It’s your go-to place for tourist shopping in Cape May.
One of our favorite places to eat while visiting the south Jersey Shore is called the Ugly Mug Pub and it’s located in the Washington Street Mall. It’s a cool place to visit. There are MUGS hanging from the ceiling when you go in there. They have delicious food, awesome drinks and a great atmosphere if you’re looking to grab a bite to eat.
Do you remember those old-fashioned 5 and 10 five and dime stores from the past? The kind you used to see in every small town back in the 50’s through early 1970’s? Guess what? You’ll still find a five and dime store at the Washington Street Mall in Cape May that is locally-owned. There have a small eatery in the back of the store where you can still get burgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and ice cream. It’s pretty cool.
