How to Freeze Baking Chocolates

How to Freeze Baking ChocolateI use a lot of baking chocolates in various recipes that I make. That includes chocolate chips, baking squares, cocoa powder, etc. To save money, I often buy it in bulk or when the local grocery store has it on sale. When storing your baking chocolates you need to keep them in a cool, dry and dark place…like inside a cupboard or pantry. They need to be kept away from light, heat and moisture.

When I buy in bulk…I like to store them in my freezer. Yes, you can safely freeze your baking chocolates! Once frozen, they can keep for up to 1 year. Here are some tips to follow:

Chocolate can’t handle temperature changes. Place the baking chocolate into your refrigerator for a few hours before placing it into the freezer. When it comes to thawing it…thaw overnight in the refrigerator. This helps it to maintain the proper texture.

Package it properly! If you have opened packages place them inside a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. I personally use freezer bags to help me save on space. Once you have it packaged…label and date it.

Unopened and still sealed bags can be frozen in their original bags.

Don’t store packages near odorous foods in your freezer. Chocolate can “absorb” odors from fish and seafood.

Never freeze chocolate that is old or past its USE BY DATE! There’s a difference between a SELL BY and USE BY date.

Don’t freeze, thaw and re-freeze it! Once it has been thawed…use it up within 30 days.
