Last month my husband had outpatient surgery for kidney stones. It was rather extensive. We were at the hospital for a little over 6 hours. The reason I’m bringing this up today is that I think it’s great that some surgeries can be done as an outpatient these days. BUT….there are many others that should NOT be outpatient at all. They (the hospitals and insurance companies) push these OP surgeries as a way to make more money…a revolving door of patients coming and going quickly. With that said, some still be overnight stays because sending patients home in incredible amounts of pain just isn’t right. Not right at all. Not all families are even equipped to take care of that person immediately after a surgery. On top of that, you hear and read about horrible complications that arise from patients being sent home so soon. Something just has to change!
I agree with you that sending people home so quickly after surgeries can be a bad idea. It seems that it is money driven and not about patient well being.
