On April 8th, 2024 we attended the Full Solar Eclipse Festival in Dunkirk, New York. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, Dunkirk is a small city that sits along the shoreline of Lake Erie in the southwestern part of the state. From central Pennsylvania, it took us almost 6 hours to get there by car. We spent 3 days and 2 nights there to attend the festival.
There was a company there called Jamestown Ice & Storage who drew hundreds of people to their tent. They had a guy there carving ice sculptures from big blocks of ice using a saw! It was amazing to see! He was so precise with all of the cuts that he was making. He turned each block of ice into a piece of art!
One of the ice sculptures was made into a lighthouse while the other ice sculpture was turned into a sun and moon to represent the solar eclipse. Over the course of 2 1/2 hours he had both completed. When totality hit and things got dark…he had a light placed inside one. It was super cool to see.
Here’s a few photos of the ice sculpting in progress and one of the finished designs.
