Easy Vanilla Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Easy Vanilla Buttercream Frosting RecipeThis Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is so easy to make and guess what? You only need 4 ingredients to make it! It’s 100% better than the stuff you buy at the grocery store! What I particularly love about homemade (besides the taste) is that it’s easier to spread on top of your cupcakes, cookies or cakes. Plus, you can double-up the recipe when making large batches or when making double-layer or triple-layer cakes. Freshly made is always better than canned!

Easy Vanilla Buttercream Frosting Recipe

3 cups confectioner’s powdered sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 – 2 Tbsp. cold milk

In a large mixing bowl beat together the confectioner’s powdered sugar with the softened butter until creamy using an electric mixer set on the low speed. Stir in the vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of cold milk. Beat again. If needed, add the second tablespoon of cold milk and beat. You only want to beat the frosting enough to make it creamy but not runny! If it’s too runny, add a little bit more of the confectioner’s sugar. If it’s too thick, add a little bit more of the cold milk. Beat after each addition until you get the consistency that you need.

This frosting recipe will cover a 9″ by 13″ cake or top 16-18 cupcakes. You want to use it immedately after making it. I do like to keep my cupcakes or cakes in the refrigerator after frosting them during the warmer times of the year. Heat can make the frosting gooey. During the wintertime that’s not an issue.

  1. Thanks for this recipe! I love to bake but will often use the can stuff, as it is convenient. However, this recipe is so easy that I can make it in no time and it won’t have all the preservatives of the can stuff.
