Are you looking for ways to save money on meat and fish while shopping at the grocery store? If so, I wanted to share a few of my tips on how I typically get 30% to 70% off. Sometimes I even get FREE meat if I’m redeeming my store’s club points. However, the point of this post is how I get deep discounts which spreads my grocery budget even more!
1. Find out when your store does their weekly markdowns on their meat and fish. Most stores have a set day that they mark down the prices on packages that are getting close to their sell by dates.
2. Check out the manager’s specials for that particular week. You can often find at least 30% off on just the manager’s specials compared to regular prices.
3. Ask at the meat counter if they have any irregular cuts of meat in the back that they’re going to sell at a discount? Often times they have them in the back and you have to ask for them. I can save 30-60% off irregular cuts of roasts, steaks, etc.
4. Look for BOGO deals. At our local grocery store they often do BOGO deals on ground beef, ground turkey, chicken thighs and legs, and thin cut pork chops. They’ll offer them at buy 2 packages get 1 package for free.
5. Buy those holiday specials in multiples! Around Thanksgiving turkey will go on sale at the store. Pick up an extra turkey or two to freeze for later use. At Christmas time and the Easter holiday we often find ham on sale. Pick up extra ham if your store is running a holiday special.
6. Use discounts when applicable to stack on top! If your store has a club card that you earn points for every purchase make sure you use it. If they offer in-store or online coupons…use them! If you’re a senior and shop on a certain day of the week they will often give a senior’s discount. Find out what discounts are offered and use what you can!
On a recent trip to the grocery store I went on a day that I know they do their meat & fish markdowns. At this particular store it’s on a Friday, so I try to hit it early in the morning. All of the markdowns are on irregular cuts or on items close to their sell-by dates. I got 18 breakfast sausage links in one package for $3.49. I then spotted the markdown special on Wild Caught Flounder Filets. These were large fish fillets that I snagged a package of 4 for $7.23. That’s dinner for 2 people for 2 nights! What a deal.
